Default AWD stops at 30 MPH?

I am considering either a V70 or XC70 and am reading up as much as I can on both models.

I have now seen mention in a number of posts here that Volvo's AWD shuts off at 30 MPH. Is this true and if so, what does that mean? Isn't that what AWD drive does and what makes it different from 4WD or am I missing something?

If the car is driving well, I can see the AWD favouring the front wheels, but if there is any slippage does the AWD re-engage?

Also, in both the V70 and XC70 forums I have seen a few posters state that owners of these vehicles can expect on average about $3000 per year in maintenance costs. That seems excessive to me. Are Volvo's really this persnickety?

Thanks

Default RE: AWD stops at 30 MPH?

That is right after 30MPH it is strictly FWD.
