Default B5254t4 cylinder head compatibility

I am currently undertaking a Volvo 240 t5 swap, I want a good displacement over the red lock sizes so I’ve chosen a b5254t4, I will most likely re-sleeve it for stength, but I do not want to deal with the vvti head,l.

what cylinder heads will bolt onto a b5254t4 that are non-vvti, if there are none, what can I do to make it work, or what engine should I go for instead.

thanks

Volvo went to VVT starting in 2000, so you should be looking for something from an 850 or a 98/99 V/S70. To note the HP turbos of those years were 2.3s where the 2.4s were LPTs. Google "volvo modular engine wiki" for some more details on what engines codes match to years/models.

yh ive been using that wiki page a lot, are you just saying there isn’t much benefit of going with a newer engine since I’m looking for simplicity.

I suppose you could try taking a 2000+ engine and see if you replace the VVT gear with a hard gear but keep in mind, the computer is aware of the cam position so not only would you need to replace the head/gear but you'd need to replace the wiring harness and ECU or live with perpetual check engine codes. That doesn't sound like simplicity to me. The simplest thing to do would be to service the existing engine's VVT gear/solenoid while doing the timing belt/tensioner/idlers, run synthetic "high mileage" oil and be all set for another 10 years/120K miles.

there is a very high chance im going to use an 850 engine harness and modify it to work with a standalone ecu, but even then I think I’m just better off looking for a b5254t instead of the t4, tiny bit harder to find but non vvt and might save me some money overall.

not sure how that makes things simpler but post up how your project winds up.
