Default Break Failure/stop safely ASAP

Group,

I drive a 2001 V70, standard.

I recently bumped into another car at low speed (10km/h). I drove the car back home, frustrated, and drove it for a few weeks before the insurance got it fixed. They had to remove the front bumper and replace the left hand side front light and a couple of pieces of plastics.

The day after I got my car back, I got the following problems:

Message: Break Failure/ stop safely ASAP.

-The (!), ABS and Traction Control lights are alwaysON;
-The Check engine light goes on at cold start. Can be reseted once the car is warm
-The speedometer and odometer aren't working.

I check the break oil level and it's fine. the car works all right, but no ABS nor traction control.

I drove the car back to the garage, they brought it in for a few hours and the lights turned off, except the ABS. I drove back home and the morning after, all lights were back on!

Help!

Sounds like a bad ABS module. Don't know enough about a 2001 though to be much help.

Bon jour,

As the above moderators have stated, it is most likely the BAS/TRAC module that failed. On some Volvos, the speedometerreceivesspeed signals from the ABS module, and if the module is shot, the speedo may not function on some models. I would try following place for repair & upgrade:

http://home.earthlink.net/~vicrocha/

Either the shop you visited did not clear/reset codes properly or there is still problems that are triggering CEL. If there is AutoZone near you (not sure if they have branches in Quebec), go there and ask them to pull codes with their OBD-II scanner. If there is a problem in the emissions control-related device, some provinces/states do not allow clearing the codes until the problem has been corrected. Some clerksmay be nice enough to "fat-finger" the scanner for you, but even so make sure to let them tell you what codes were present. If there is no AutoZone or other parts shops near you that can do this service, try an independent shop that specialises in Swedish/Euro makes and have their ASE-certified Master Technician work on your Volvo. If there is no such shop near you, well, the dealer is waiting for you with a heavy wallet. Or as a last resort, you can buy an OBD-II scanner yourself and pull codes on your own. Note, however, that a cheap scanner has limited functions and to read & clear codes in the engine & tranny ECUs, you may need a scanner that can cost $170 and up. Actron CP9175 or better would work well, I believe.

Bonne nuit,

JPN
