Buffing Paint
Hi! I have a black 2004 Volvo S60. I have some chips, scratches and dings where my husband smacked my car his white Chevy door. Can I buff these out? And, if I do, will this take away the shine? I want to try something to improve the look of the paint before I consider getting a paint job.
I would first try polishing compound. Might take a little rubbing. When done, if it works, put a good coat of polish over it. Make sure you get polishing compound and not rubbing compoud which ismuch more coarse and will take the clear coat off.
As for chippings, I would use touch-up paint. They are kind of expensive at the dealer but the colour would be the closest match. Clean the chipped sections with soap & water and let it air dry before touching up.
Then, as JimKW has suggested, I would use polishing compound. Colour-specific polishing compound works best, but I think Turtle-wax took them off the shelf some years ago. Hopefully someone else still makes them. Use nonabrasive cloth for polishing.
