The damn thing just shuts off! Hello
Hi all
I got my first Volvo a few weeks ago. It's a '92 740 Turbo Wagon. One owner, well-maintained, clean inside and out. Overall, I'm quite happy.
One problem: I'll be driving along and the car will just shut off. It has only happened a handful of times - maybe once or twice a week on average - and in between that it will drive just fine. And it has only happened when I'm going relatively slow, say 30 mph or so, but that might be coincidental because I have only taken it on the freeway a few times.
It doesn't stall, it doesn't run rough or slowly peter out - it just shuts off. Like someone hit a kill switch. Afterwards, I can always get it started again. It will struggle a bit. I might have to crank it a bit, stop, crank it again, etc. But it always starts up again. So far, at least.
So, any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Start by checking your fault codes for clues.
Post any codes found and then someone can start offering you suggestions.
(Might be fuel related.)

Okay, I figured out how to retrieve fault codes. (My first Volvo, remember.) I got two:
1-4-4 and 3-1-2
Looks like the fuel injection relay is the most likely culprit. Unless someone advises me differently I guess I'll just replace that relay and see if that fixes it.

Update: I just pulled the fuel injection relay. I guess I was hoping to see some corrosion or other indication that it's bad, but I didn't. It looks like new. (I don't think it is, it says "made in Germany" on it.)
Looks aside, it could still be bad though, right? Is there a way to test it so I know for sure?
