Default Dry cv axle?

2007 S80 V8 AWD, Should the right front cv axle be dry inside of transfer?
I had no problem pulling the axle, it slid right out, but I noticed the axle was completely clean with absolutely no grease or oil after removing.
All fluid levels are ok.
Anyone know what's up with?
