A late update: The paperwork was bad.
Flew to Maryland to meet a Dealer that was actually a Wholesaler from Alabama selling off a "friends" lot in Indiana....and the paperwork was filled out incorrectly. I walked out airfare and an entire day wasted. Ebay evidently lets ANYONE sell as a Dealer with no verification, which is complete bull****.

By INCORRECTLY do you mean the details entered were false or incomplete?
Did the vehicle itself look to be a good purchase for the price ?
Aside of the dealer (claimed) being incorrect was it possibly still a worthwhile purchase irrespective, especially given your travel costs and inconvenience.

First thing I look at is the sellers feedback rating. If it's questionable (especially a 1st time listing) then I move on. And their description can be a big turnoff as well. I saw one listing where the seller said they'll mail you the title AFTER you pick up the car. Any car I'm serious about, I run a carfax first. Not cheap but you'd be surprised at the crap some people try to hide.

None of that matters if the person decides to publish a car they don't really know a lot about. I usually as several questions but it's still risky. A call or two will usually clear things up.
I traveled 400 miles once to look at a '96 850 (suppose to be R) and it was not. Just a hyped up T5 that was in poor condition. I offered them $1,500 for the car but they had about $6,000 in it and would not take my offer. Total waste of time. Then I took another trip 400 miles in the other direction to buy a S70 T5 and it was the same situation, poor condition and run down. I told them I thought the car was worth about $1,500 and they wanted $3,500. Couldn't work it out. Really sucks to travel to get a car. After those 2 experiences I learned a lot about reading photos and contacting people before I pull the trigger. The last 3 distant purchases went well. Wasn't pleased with the last 960 I purchased but it worked out ok.

I like to call and ask a seller the scale question when I'm really interested:
On a scale of 1-10, 1 being poor 10 being excellent, how would you rate the interior?
Same for exterior
Same for engine/tranny/suspension.
If at anytime they pause, you know it will be questionable. Then you decide if you want to go any further.

I had good luck with Ebay
I bought my 1999 v70 xcawd 8 years ago on Ebay...actually was the high bidder when the auction closed and the reserve was not met.
I called the seller (a dealer). Asked how far off I was...he said $250. I offered the additional money and we made a deal. I traveled to Houston from Santa Fe. Car was everything I expected and has been great ever since.
I'd buy on Ebay again.
