Default Engine over revving.

Hi all,
My 1999 V40 engine managment light has come on and the enginehas started to over rev when i'm driving and alsoat idle, going up to near 4000 revs.
Took it to my local garage who said that the crankshaft sensor was faulty, they replaced the sensor but it was still over revving. They then informed me that the old sensor was damaged by something in the housing and would they would have to remove the gearbox to have a look to see what could have caused the damage, also the cam belt is in need ofreplacing.

Could these problems be the reason the engine is over revving or are they justclueless..........

Anything else I should be looking at..

Thanks
kpmaca.

A Bad coolant temp sensor is a common cause of your problems.

Thanks for the Info.

Do you know of anything that could have caused the damage to the crank shaft sensor.

Have you had any gearbox work done or rear main seal replaced?

No.
The garage want to remove the gearbox to do an inspection, which is not going to be cheap....

So any advice would be much appreciated.

Usually if the crank sensor is bad or damaged it will start hard not rev high. I would replace the coolant temp sensor and thermostat first. Is there any codes on the system?

Not sure what you mean by codes......They said there were a lot of faults that came up, but the crankshaft sensor was definately down and it would be the cheapest to start with.
will tell them to replace the coolant temp sensor and thermostat next.
Do you think it would still be a good idea to remove the gearbox for an inspection to see what caused the damage to the crank shft sensor, as the end of the sensor wasbroke off and the copper wire coil hanging out.

Unless someone broke the bracket holding it I cannot think of anyway it could be damaged. Or unless something somehow got dropped in there.
