Default Exhaust Cam Gear Leaking 2001 Volvo S40

Went to mechanic who we have used for 12+ years due to an oil leak. Said it was the exhaust cam gear and basically said it wasn’t worth the cost to fix it due to labor costs. I’d like to try myself because at this point we have nothing to lose. I saw some You Tube videos but all of the videos showed the engine being out of the vehicle. Can it be fixed without taking the engine out?

Sure. Just make sure you have a cam lock tool. It's not a hard job though it can get expensive if you open up a can of worms (water pump, timing belt, tensioner, etc)
