Fan Nut (Almond) / Bonus Tale
Best Sunday All - Here's some shade tree humor for you...
Per our moderators assurance of ease I successfully removed the blower fan for the heater yesterday and found the source of the rumble... A whole Almond. I was expecting insulation and found a nut, certainly preferred over a tiny nest. I would like to thank our moderator 'Tech', it really was easy - far easier than the 4Runner... Which brings me to my other fan tale.
The last time I had a rumble in a fan it was in my '94 4Runner. That time I found a small wad of insulation in the fan basket that once removed cleared the problem right up. Now my wife recalls me being good and putting the wad of insulation in the trash can in our garage... I think I may have tossed it on the floor after a couple hours under the dash. Shortly after making that repair, our other car, an Altima, starting running poorly. It would try and stall at lights and other low idle situations. Guess what I found in the airbox?... That's right, the same exact wad of insulation I had pulled out of the 4Runner. Reinstalled in our other car courtesy of a mouse - who BTW must have had one h*ll of a wild ride before he decided to find a new place to make his nest.
Nuts eh?
In another note, my climate control module in the dash (fan controls & temp control... heated seat and defroster control as well) would not power up after I reinstalled the fan under the dash in the '01XC. First I checked the fuses and finding nothing blown, I removed the glovebox again and reseated each connector I had previously removed. (two lights for the glove and the 4 wire plug for the fan.) this time everything powered up fine and it's been good so far. Is there something I should know about disconnecting electrical items in the Volvo system?
And while we're at it, the fan itself was one really rad part. smallish but solid and sturdy. I noticed inside the fan basket on the fins were a couple of small metal clips. I was wondering if they were weights to balance the fan or if the fan uses the metal clips to moniter how fast the fan is spinning. Anyone know?
