Tale of two Volvo specialists...
A Volvo mechanic in Chicago informed me that "Volvo advises against a transmission oil change. Leave it alone if level and color are Ok."
Another Volvo mechanic in LA informed me that "You should absolutely change the fluid or it eventually ruins the disc. Volvo never said not to change the fluid. They said you need a special kind of synthetic fluid."
This was concerning my s40 but also I guess it concerns all the late 90's to present models.
I looked around the web and never found anything concrete.
Any comments?
Thanks!
It's never BAD to change your transmission oil. Period, cut and dry. Just like you can NEVER change your oil too much, you can NEVER change your transmission oil too much.
I guess it seemed a bit odd that he would say that Volvo recommends not to change the oil at all. It certainly makes sense to change the oil. I mean it can't be eternally self-cleaning oil.
You need to find out exactly which transmission is in the car first.
