Default fuel problem

I have a 1989 240dl that wont start. Tank was nearly empty then stopped to fill up. Drove home 40 miles in the pouring rainand it seemed a little hesitant. Could barely get it started the next day, wouldnt idle.Both fuel pump fuses are o.k.Depressurized system, put on new fuel filter, now it wont cough or start at all. Tested both fuel pumps and was able to hear them running with a jumper wire as suggested in manual. Replaced fuel pump relay with no changes.Was running fine uptil now.Any ideas would be greatly appreciated . Thanks, Jeff

Default RE: fuel problem

Water in the ign system ?
Check the dizzy cap and around the plugs for water.

EDIT;
Maybe the tank filter sock is clogged ?
I'd pull a fuel line and see how the actuall fuel flow is.
