Full Size Sedan

Has Volvo ever really made what you call a full size sedan? I think the S80 is as big as any car they ever made. And cars, in general, are not nearly as big as they once were. Look at a mid 60's full size car compared to today's biggest cars and there is no comparison. My 63 Pontiac Catalina would fit four people in the trunk. I know this for a fact because we went to the drive-in that way.

Well, the s90 was really a rebadged 960 which was just a gussied up 700 series - so if it was a "full" sized then so were the 900's and 700's. Which is not meant to denigrate the S90 - they were quite nice and appeared cavernous inside. The 2 I've driven were down a tad on power and they showed there age, both engineering and style wise.
The S80 was a whole new car and while Volvo tried to tighten it up it still is a bit soft - as befits the image Volvo wants for the car, that of a big sedan and although it has mostly very similar demensions to the s90 it is wider, an important component of being "big", right? It'll scoot 4 people very comfortably on long trips, the center rear position is for emergency use only.
Ahh yes, sneaking people into the drive in. Still, it was usually more fun with just one passenger in the car - and the fold down rear seat (present on Volvos of course) would have prvented many a stiff neck the next day.

The full size sedans diasappeared with the abundance of rear drive cars. With the exception of the 7 series bimmer and a few other 100k cars, there is no more full size sedans and the S80 is one of the largest around. At work we have Crown Vics (which this is the last year for), and my S80 is about the same size inside, but the better layout makes it feel larger. Supposedly Caddy is bringing back a larger DTS type platform next year.
