Has Anyone Heard of "shift flare's"
Got a concern and hopefully someone can help....
Bought a 2001 V70 T5 a couple of weeks ago and for the 2+ weeks I have been driving the car, I have noticed the car "slipping". I thought it was the transmission so I brought it to a transmission shop. The guy actually went online and did research on a website called Motor ALLDATA www.motoralldata.com. He found a Technical Bulletin on any 2001 S60, V70, V70 XC, XC90 2.5T. regarding AW55-50 Adaption Procedure. This has to do with the gearbox and how it relies on adaptive data to properly adjust it's shift pressure. The data colleted is through the TCM (Don't know the acronym). If adaption is not complete, it may result in Shift flare, harsh down shifts, harsh garage shifts and harsh neutral control engagement/disengagement. The shift flare described is when the engine RPM increases during a shift.
My question is: With 65,000 miles on my car, (did not buy the warranty) If this is the case, what repairs/replacement will be involved and how much can this all cost me? I will probably do a diagnostic first with AAA to validate my findings.
Anyone else have this kind of problem? (what a question...from the looks of this forum, Volvo's are more for safety than the car itself...Sheesh, if the car stalls, stops and gets hit by another vehicle , hey, at least you'll be safer...I guess...)

yeah the trans guy you took it to is right about the TCM (transmission control module) and it needs the latest software plus a reset of the adaption.... software would cost around $30.00 plus an hour to download it.
Agreed the first thing to do is get the Upgrade.
Depends on the Dealer for the price.
FLATRATE is correct on how much it SHOULD cost BUT Alot of Dealers try to charge more.

It will be interesting to see if the car has already had the software upgrade by the previous owner. My 2001 was upgraded June 2002, I am 2nd owner purchased Dec 2004. AND I have the 2/3 flareup.
