Brief question: My vehicle is a 2023 XC60 T8 Recharge. I got a new phone recently and the vehicle won't let me connect the car and the phone app without all 3 keys present in the vehicle . I only have 2 keys at this point. Both are registered as service keys (also known as the care keys). The master key fob is gone. Is it possible to delete/edit the original, missing master key fob?




Full issue: My master key fob got water damaged and started malfunctioning. I used the orange service key fob until I could get a replacement fob. I ordered the sport key fob from the dealership because it is water resistant. After the dealership programmed it, the car's dashboard was still saying I was using the service key. The service dept said there was no way around that unless I bought another master key fob. I was very upset that they did not disclose that the sport fob would not replace the master fob until AFTER I made the purchase and paid for service even though I told them that was the point of the transaction before we started. They refused to exchange the sport fob for a regular fob.


I have since thrown away the damaged, malfunctioning master fob. I specifically asked if I needed it, and they aid I could throw it away because it was dead. Now, I'm trying to connect my new phone through the Volvo app, but the car says all THREE keys must be present. The dealership did not delete the master key or make the new fob a master.


Is it even possible to delete or edit a master key fob for the car? If not, even if I were to buy another master fob, the car would just say all FOUR keys must be present to proceed with the phone app pairing.


Any insight or suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

 

It is entirely possible to delete a master key and replace it with a new master key in your XC60, but this requires a dealer with the proper tools to reset the key management system. I would recommend returning to a Volvo dealer to specifically request this system reset and programming of your new key as the master key. If this still does not work, contact another dealer or Volvo technical support to ask for more details.

Thank you for your reply. I contacted the service manager. At no extra cost, he deleted the missing key and set the orange care key AND the water-resistant sport fob key as the master keys. Since neither is a care key, I have not tried to set the speed limitation feature. I never used it anyway and I don't want to risk something going wrong and having to go back to the dealership over the key issue again.
