Muffler Delete?? Please help!!!
Hi Volvo peeps.
I really need help. Please forgive me if I am not using correct terms or if you need more clarification on my issue. Here goes.
I gave my 2 sons who are 17 & 16 my paid off Volvo S 60. She has alot of miles..right at 200K but sbe runs good and is really reliable.
My sons and their friends did a muffler delete about a week after having the car. I think they just took the muffler off and it made the sound alot meaner and louder. Kids like that these days I guess.
Well weeks later all the clunking and clicking noises started and all the fricking oil drained out from the MUFFLER??. Basically the engine blew but the turbo is still good.
She is currently at my mechanic. He specializes in Audi,BMW,Benz and Volvo. He has been my mechanic for 8 yrs and I think he ia a real honest guy.
He told us that when the boys did the muffler delete it caused back pressure and made the turbo work twice as hard and she started spitting out all the oil from the muffler which caused the engine and muffler to blow😑
Have you eve heard of this? Is this possible? My boys are fighting me so hard ans saying my mecahnic has no idea what he is talking about and that it is a performance car? Meanwhile they are 17 & 16 and are 100% positive when they tppk the mufdler off that IT DID NOT AFFECT ANYTHING.
This is why am I am here to ask the pros...
What do you think happened? What caused this? Before I handed the keys over,I had the volvo inspected and it was on point!
Please help,
Mara

The key thing is let them pay to take care of it. It'll be a good character building experience.
The mechanic's comments were obviously speculative, and anybody can see that. As to the muffler, I think it's more likely than the engine was destroyed by some other things they did that you don't know about.

assuming its not the turbo that is gone (which could also let oil into the exhaust), I agree with firebirdparts that the root cause was something else - like over-revving the engine which led to catastrophic parts failure (rods/pistons etc) or a waste gate failure (or jerry-rig?) which overboosted the engine. Removing the exhaust wouldn't lead to that problem as high flow exhausts are standard performance add ons. A simple compression test by the mechanic will confirm the damage. Time to turn the car into a project for the boys and let them shop for a replacement block (Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market) and let them try an engine swap :-)
If anything doing a muffler delete would reduce backpressure to let the exhaust flow more freely and not cause more backpressure. I'm in agreement with the others that something else has to be the cause for the engine to go bye-bye.
