need help with a 2002 volvo s40
Hello, i have a 2002 1.9l petrol engine s40 volvo that has a airbag warning light lit up on the dashboard. I have diagnosed the problem with OBD and it told me that CEM central electronics has a low voltage or that it is weak. it also tells me that the SIPS side airbag has a low voltage aswell. Im wondering if this can be fixed by replacing the airbag central unit under the center console. I have tried to look for those but cant seem to find one that matches the manufacturers original serial number 30613047A 1 airbag unit, does it work with any else unit that is meant for 1 airbag or do i need the same exact one?
Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

easy enough to replace the CEM on the Gen 1 S40s. You should be able to find a used CEM at a breaker yard or on eBay (I replaced mine and the part cost $65 US). CEMs are not "paired" on this model so there's no dealer programming required. I doubt a low voltage error to the airbag module means the module is bad - that would point to the connector (which can be cleaned), wiring or power source (the CEM has internal relays so if the relay or the circuit board fails - no power to the downstream devices...). Just remember to disconnect the battery before working on the CEM or SIPS system. Not sure what code you are seeing for the side airbag but again that may be pointing to wiring. Around here, its not uncommon to have mice or chipmunks chewing on wires so you may need to do some tracing to look for an open or a bad ground.
