I have been a long-time Saab owner coming from a long-time Saab family. Sadly GM killed Saab, but as a long time admirer of Volvo, I look forward to developing a long-term relationship with Vovlo-a kind of kindered spirit.

I have two children and I am trying to decide between buying a previously owned S80 or XC90. While I recognize these are quite different platforms, I need a rock solid, dependable vehicle that is large enough to carry my family locally, on vacation trips and that is good in bad weather. Additionally, as it will be my personal vehicle I drive to work each day as well, I need a vehice that not only looks professional, but also that is comfortable for a 26 mile, 1.5 hour bumper to bumper daily grind commute.

I had an opportunity to very briefly drive both model vehicles earlier today at a dealership and really enjoyed them both (unfortunately both cars I learned had been in several accidents each so not purchasing either). While it should be easy, I really am not sure which model to go with. Not being particularly familiar with either, I would really appreciate hearing recommendations on which model Volvo-affecionados feel would best fill the bill.

As part of the consideration, I would very much appreciate hearing if:
1. either has a better history of dependability,
2. either has a better history of longevity,
3. what versions, engines, years to stay away from (i.e. good versions and years and bad),
4. general experiences with either or both vehicles
