Default New with Questions!

Hey everyone, I've got a few questions. First let me start out with the story. A friend of mine has a 1994 Volvo 940 sedan, and it has been parked for a year, maybe even 2 years outside. I was told that it was "running when parked". I was just wondering if there were any special precautions I should take before putting a new battery in and turning it over and attempting to start it. Also, is it possible for me to work on this car by myself, as I consider myself to pretty knowledgeable about working on vehicles. Lastly, how expensive are parts for this car if I do all of the work myself, without taking it to a mechanic? Any feedback would be appreciated, and thank you in advance.
