no turn signals
My 2001 volvo s60 died and it was the alternator, had it fixed, now my turn signals don't work... I was told it's a VERY expensive fix... is it? or is there something we can do ourselves to fix it?... before the alternator went the high beams wouldn't stay on, I had to hold it ... I was told there is a connection between the them... can anyone help!

1) check fuses 2) check bulbs (when my alternator went, it blew out both headlight bulbs!) 3) check relays (including "flasher relay"). Its possible the relays are in the CEM which may need to be replaced. Do the other bulbs work ie parking lights, brake lights etc? Do the other functions on the stalk work - ie toggling high beams?

Check your battery voltage you should see something close to 12 volts and higher voltage when you start the car.
Check your ground points. Even if the alternator is fine if the engine or body ground strap is bad that can cause weird stuff. You can temporarily run a heavy ground to the body and engine from the negative on the battery if that causes a change in RPM or if it causes things to start working then you are on the right path
I've found bad grounds a few times where they looked ok but weren't and it can be easily overlooked
The signals might just be trying to work on lower voltage and if you have bad grounds it can create symptoms that might have led you to replace the alternator
the flasher relay us usually pretty easy to change and cheap
You might be able to swap it with the relay for hazard lights to checknitv

Check the vehicles fuses to ensure they are not blown. If the directionals only flash in one position and are off constantly in the other direction, the usual cause is a burnt-out bulb. Replace any bulbs that are not lit. . If the turn signals are inoperative in both directions, a defective flasher unit or blown fuse is the usual cause.
