Question Oil changes: what are you doing?

Hi. I am still a little new here. I purchased a beautiful 2005 S60 AWD 2.5-5 turbo in June 2009. I changed the oil shortly thereafter at 80K. Used a high-quality Valvoline of the correct spec.

I hear a lot of ideas on oil changes. The old school says every 3K or 6 mos, and I know that new oils are far better than that, and our
manuals say 7,500K, but that seems to be for both turbo and non-turbo.

So I have settled on every 5K. Since I work at home and only drive about that 5K a year, I am changing it about once a year. Last change at a 76 station led to my trying their synthetic blend. Immediately the engine ran more smoothly, and depending on what replies I get to this, will continue to be my oil of choice.

But you members are great, and oil is as we all know, vital. So I look forward to your replies. Thanks in advance. TBH

Short trips are the big oil killer, although synthetics are more resistant to the sort of degradation that occurs from that. Synthetics are really better all around - especially; long intervals, high heat (read "turbos"), moisture.
I use synth, change every 5k. Use volvo filters too.

Both my Volvos have had this regimen followed since new.

My S70 has 190,000 - Doesn't burn any oil, runs like a 'bat-out-of-hell'.
My S80 has 55,000, See above.

FWIW - When I bought the 70, the Service Mgr told me to let it idle for 30 seconds when starting a cold engine(to allow the turbo to get 'lubed up') and let the engine idle for 30 to 60 seconds if it had been running at 'highway speeds' (to allow the turbo to slow down with lubrication). Don't know if it works or not, but I've never replaced a turbo.

Hmmm...working in a shop, let me just state the obvious. It isn't what oil you keep in your crankcase..it's that you keep oil in the car. I've yet to have a customer come in with motor problems simply because they ran dino oil. If you're particular about oil changes, your car will have less issues than people who routinely run their cars 10k and 3 quarts short. Yesm synthetic definitely is an improvement over dino as far as turbos are concerned. Dino will coke up and clog oil passages; syn won't. Buying a car with 150-200k on the clock with no verified maint. logs and multiple owners and immediately swapping in Royal Purple syn oil is a bit over zealous in my opinion.
3k or six months is a good rule of thumb.

There are a lot of threads with this subject so you can search and read them if you want more input.I run synthetic in all of our cars. Try to change within 5k / 6 months. There is a big difference between short trips & low mileage. I am starting to wonder how hard it is on a motor to sit for more than four days at a time. I think that so much oil will drain off the motor into the pan, etc., that each start is almost dry. That would cause a lot of wear.

I've run synthetics since day one (different brands). I've done the full Blackstone oil analysis a few times (once at 60K, and again at 100K) with oil changes at the 7.5 K interval. In those reports, they said I could extend the change interval by an additional 1000 miles minimum. However being the conservative person I am, once I passed the 100K tick, I changed to 5K intervals, still running the synthetic. In looking down the oil fill hole as close as I can, I don't note any sign of sludging. Here is a link to discussion on a different forum. Scroll to the end and there are some pretty good links if you wish to learn more about oil selection.

This is like asking people what their favorite color is. Opinions vary, and all major producers make quality oils.
I'd like to tell you it matters also that a quality filter is used- use an OEM for sure...

I do 4k OCI, did 5k and did not like the black oil. full synthetic castrol or valvoline on the volvos, amsoil in the truck (only drive it 2-3k a year, once a year OCI).
