sludge, oil changes, oil grade...
Hi guys, first off, i just want to know if any of you (with newer or older volvo's for that matter), have oil sludge??? Some have mentioned that switching to synthetic oil will also help in reducing sludge. I have a 2006 V70 2.5T and i have yet to see any sludge in the car, either via dipstick or inside the oil cap.
On my wifes 2006 passat wagon (2.0T) there is quite a bit of sludge going on, this started from day 1...i've read that they are prone to this as well as oil consumption....so get this, her car was brand new, using synth. oil, and it has always sludged up...WHILE my car, bought used, with 58000km, using only CONVENTIONAL oil and has no sludge!
I spoke to a volvo mech. around my area and was quite surprised, he mentioned that if the car had always used conventional oil, that i should stick with it and not switch to synth, BUT TO FOLLOW THE OIL CHANGE INTERVALS!
so here's my take: most say that the key is the oil change interval...so if i change my oil every 5-6000 km MAX with dyno oil, i shouldn't have any problems...does this hold water?
INSTEAD OF:
switching to synthetic oil, spending more money and running it a little longer then the regular stuff? I figure, in the end, it comes to the same, but i'd rather spend a little less on the oil then to get reamed by the dealer/garage on the synth. stuff.
I'm sure that oils today are not like oils from the 50's and that they are a much better product with good additives in it, even the dyno oil.
whatcha think?
thanks

he would be right, stick with regualar oil, use always a good brand (pennzoil, amsoil, castrol) and change it every 5000kms. you should be fine.
me on the other hand my car has a mixed history of synthetic/ regular throughout its life, im going to stick with regular oil, even though volvo recommends synthetic especially to a turbo engine.
although if i were to buy a new car i would go completly synthetic, for the whole life of the car, because you know the history, and you know that as long as you own the car you'll be putting synthetic.
VW's have more problems than that, i hope you got a good one!

Hey Matt, ya that's my plan...reg. stuff but with a good interval change...
As for my wife's car, to be honest, we haven't had any problems yet (knock on wood), but i too kinda worry about long-term reliability. We'll see, we might keep it, if not might get another volvo.
Take care...time to go to work..
