Orange antifreeze
So...my wife goes out and buys a 98 V70 non turbo with 94,000 miles on it confirmed by CarFax...One of the things that I noticed about the car is that it has that Orange anti freeze in it and I have heard horror stories about that stuff turning into jelly.
Is this true?....change it out to green?....Thanks

In the UK we have an organisation called the BSI (British Standards Institute), which covers everything that can be purchased on the consumer market.
Now then, anti freeze. There are dozens of different brands available here! Ones from the manufacturers and aftermarket varieties. Over here genuine GM anti freeze is orange, extremely good value and a good price. Ford genuine stuff is deep blue, also very good but pricey, aftermarket stuff is blue, green, orange, yellow, infact allsorts of colours, but as long as it has that BSI mark on the label, it's been tested more than an over active prostitute.
Sorry to ramble here but, I'm guessing things are different in the USA?

In the United States the most popular colour is green. Toyota seems to use red often, I've seen Suzuki (Korean KIA OEM) uses blue in some of their models, and others seem to use yellow, though very rare.
As long as there is no sign of rust (scale, debris, etc...) I would assume it is fine but if the car does not have full service record and if you're not sure when the last flush was, I would have it replaced with a name brand's 50:50 mix. I would not buy a pre-mix solution as it is a rip-off. I change my coolant at every 30,000 miles or 3 years, or 60,000 miles or 6 years for new generation, extended life coolant.

GM silica free antifreeze is orange. Why? Who knows? Toyota I once had used marischino cherry red antifreeze. The problem with silica free antifreeze is/was that some makers thought it would last 120K miles. Oops. Sort of like the old days when people thought Mobil 1 was absolutely good for 12K miles. Oops, again.
You don't know when this was changed, right? Except at least once in 94K miles. Change it. That's cheap insurance. After all, I just might be melted orange Popsicle juice!
