Question about radio codes

Question about radio codes
I am looking for a replacement HU-801 radio. When checking Ebay, I see that some of the radios come with unlock code and some of them do not even require it. I had power disconnected to my car number of times and never was asked to input a code.
So what's the deal with that? Why some of the radios require code and some of them do not.

Look in the owners manual or call the stealer.

Called the dealer. Not many options here. My 2003 S80 needs software download after radio is replaced. Aftermarket may or may not work - dealer cannot tell me as they do not install aftermarket radios. Just the software update is $26.45 but (yes there is but), it is up to the service department to decide if they will do just that (meaning I will install radio and have them upload just the software). I am waiting for them to call me back on that. Other option is to pay $547.01 for new radio that includes software upgrade.

Update: Got a call back from the dealer. They will not do just the software update. They claim that the radio wouldn't be installed by them and that they do not want to take any responsibility for any incompatibility, etc.
So I have two options now: pony up $550 for new radio or drive with broken radio. Of course I am not spending that kind of money on a new radio because this would be third radio that would be installed in my car since it was new. $550 for a junk that lasts 2-3 years is not worth it.

wow, if it is an oem part & that part is the right part number to the car, i cannot see what's the reason they can refuse you job. but of course they will not provide any warrenties to you seen you come in with a used radio. they will not take any responsible for that. but other then that I cannot see why not. on the other hand, I seem aftermarket radio installed s80. but it is not like just get a radio then install it. no, you need to buy some sort of kit to fool the network in order to get it working.

Man, that technology really sucks. I guess what sucks more are the people that break into cars and steel stereo's so companies have to make their radios worthless when stolen.
I find it a little hard to believe the stealer will be jerks like that. Is it possible that your stereo just has a software problem that has made it not work? Is that the only stealer in town? What is wrong with your stereo? Maybe take it and have it done at another stealer.

I get the "CD Error" message on my stereo. I did the usual: battery disconnect, laser lens cleaning, etc. Nothing worked. Must be mechanical problem.
The dealer in my town is not very reliable and easy to work with. I had problems with them before. I will check with other dealers next week.

Update: Today, I called Volvo customer service department and spoke to a very nice lady. She told me that replacement radio may or may not work. Problem would be with steering controls that could stop working with the replacement radio. This would require a software download that the dealer was talking about. She also said that there is no restriction directly from Volvo not to perform just this procedure. But, each Volvo dealer is independently owned and they may have their own policy regarding this procedure. In this case, she advised to call another dealership and ask them if they are going to do it.
So I guess I will get an used radio and see if it works. Worst case scenario, I will lose steering wheel controls (not a big deal).
She also said that if I need a security code for the radio, I can call her back with radio' serial number and she will give me the code. So if your dealership wants to charge you for the code, check with customer service.

Update: I have purchased used radio from Ebay. I have 2003 and I ordered 2004 HU-801 radio. I just installed it and there was no code to enter and the radio works 100%. Steering wheel controls work and I did not get any error or warning messages on dashboard. Total cost was $110 delivered. That's 20% of the Volvo price for new unit. Best thing is that I am glad I do not have to deal with my local Volvo dealer.
