Quick question about odometer/speedometer on 940
Considering buying a 940 Turbo Wagon but have a little concern. The owner states the odometer works correctly but says the speedometer is either off or not functioning (not sure which). The car is a 91 and only has 140k on it so I'm a little suspicious as I have yet to see one with under 200k on it for sale. First off, does the speedometer malfunctioning/not working have any effect on the odometer working correctly. In most vehicles I've had experience with they are tied together and typically if one goes nuts, so does the other. Secondly, I know there is a way to use an OBD-1 scanner to get accurate mileage readings on the 850s, does this apply to the 940s as well and if so how do you do it? I like the car but dont want to buy something without being sure the mileage is correct.
On a 200/700/900 series Volvo, you can NEVER be sure that the mileage is correct. The 240's have a little plastic gear that strips out at around 100K, the 700/900 series has two tiny electric motors that drive the speedo and odometer separately. These can fail independently of each other. There is also a sending unit located on the differential that can fail, resulting in no signal to either odometer or speedometer. One problem with these failures is that the computer gets a vehicle speed signal through the speedo and if this is lacking it can't control the idle properly, usually resulting in an inordinately high idle speed. One of several major design flaws in what are otherwise great cars..
S10Lowrider, you are looking at a 21 year old car. Proceed with caution. Other than that, you're looking at cars that have no real value other than what you are willing to pay for it. Do look through this site and other Volvo sites for a buyer's guide, but really, it's an oooooolllllldddddd car.
The 940 replaced the 740 so, whatever good the 740 was, the 940 should be a little better. I put over 400,000 miles on my 740 and it had a lot to go. I only gave it up because a single mom needed some wheels so I gave it to her and purchased a 960. It was not turbo, which is all I buy now.
