Unhappy 92 940- speedometer/odometer not working/not shifting gears

While driving one day my speedometer stopped working, as did the odometer, and the car had difficulty shifting gears (I was in Tennessee trying to up those hills..). We have replaced the speed sensor in the rear of the car, and it worked again until I reached 50mph and it all stopped working again. Is it possible that the wire from the rear to the front of the car could be messed up? And if so, how do I replace that? My car won't shift gears anymore since this happened so I can't drive it and would appreciate any help offered!

Well, sorry but the speedo not working will not affect shifting gears. It'll affect the cruise control but that's about it. It certainly is possible for the wire to be bad but I'd start with that sensor again... then look at the wire.

I just got back home{barely} with my 92 960. Same thing. I have a push button switch on the shifting console with a W S or an E. The lights are shifting between E&W and the shiftup arrow on the dash is blinking also. The speedo won`t work either. The computer seems lost. It has done this before but usually only when it is raining. Today it is hot and humid so I don`t know what is up with that. I think we are experiencing the same problem. hopefully someone here can help. I love my car but this problem is a real pain.

Y'all have transmissions that are a little more sophisticated. There is a sensor on the passenger side of the transmission near the exhaust downpipe that fails due to heat. Got to tell you, when these issues arise, often it isn't just the sensor though...it's often time for a new tranny.
