Rust on Older Models
Hi all. I am thinking of buying a '91 or '89240 wagon, but the only down side is that I live in the North East, where salt is perfusely used on the roads to prevent ice.
Would a 240 rust if it is a daily driver on a major road with salt on it? I have read that you should clean the car once a week to prevent from rust! In the end, this all would be very costly, and there is no way I can move to the sunshine state just yet!
I am open to all measures of preventing rust, and I would also like to hear what people with older models do to prevent rust.
About what year, does Volvo start making rust free cars - 95 or 96?
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Conrad

Volvo's don't rust because they are made from unobtanium.
This is a rare metal that wont rust, ever.
PS, Metal rusts. Volvos are made from metal, same as EVERY other car on the road. Deal with it.

The older Volvos (70's to mid 80's) did indeed have some greater than average rust issues. Volvo began super undercoating them and a lot of the issues were resolved. But, with the exception of the DeLorean and the Corvette...all cars rust. Even these two do underneath. You might consider buying a Volvo that has spent its time in the southwest, New Mexico, Texas, where roads are not salted nearly so often.
