Default speedometer goes to 120 and stays

I have an 88 244dl. while driving yesterday I watched the speedo travel from 35mph all the way up to 120. Now when I turn on the key it goes right to 120 and stays. Is this an issue with the console itself? I noticed the odometer is not moving either. Any ideas would be great

Dude, slow down!!

Seriously, if that car has a speedo cable, then it's mechanical issue in the speedo head unit. Otherwise electrical issue somewhere in cluster or sending unit. Sorry, I'm not a 240 guy so don't know more than that. Assume you posted in 240 section too?

On an 1988 240 the speedometer is electrical. There is no speedometer cable. Besides the Odometer, are the other instruments working normally? The speedometer works by getting pulses from the rear differential. These get converted into something that can drive the speedometer needle. Perhaps a voltage. This may be tricky to check and an area were I am not expert.

The easiest solution may be to get another gauge cluster. I don't know how expensive this would be though. You mileage will be different, however, if this is cheap enough you will know if the problem is you speedometer or the sender in the differential.

You may want to move or repost this in the 240 section to see if someone has some experience with sorting this out.
