Default Odometer goes blank, Speedometer doesn't work

Whats going on guys. I'm new to the volvo world, but I'm pretty happy with my '99 C70 Coupe. It only has a little over 90,000mi and it's pretty clean inside and out.

But just recently I've been having trouble with my little lady. When I'm driving I noticed all of a sudden the odometer turns to dashes and the speedometer doesn't work. When I'm stopped at a red light or stop sign and I try to accelerate, it seems to just idol slowly. It takes a while for the engine to kick in and then it's alright until I stop again. After a while the odometer comes back on and the speedometer shoots back up to where it should be and the car runs fine. It's very frustrating, especially in Chicago traffic!

Thanks for any and all of your feedback and help!!!

+1, since the speedometer goes inoperative. I am surprised though that you are not getting any dash lights lit up when the problem occurs.

I am having the same problem with my 98 convertible and joined the group for a solution. With my blonde brain and research on the net I believe it is the abs module. have found several rebuild sites and a couple of new ones. any suggestions on rebuild verses new?
It looks like it should have been a recall like the throttle issue, which by the way seems to have returned.

You can choose to rebuild your own. I went with a refurbished one for my vehicle since the price was good. This was 3 years ago.

I have done about 10 or more of them myself and never had any problems.

Sorry I have checked up on the forum I've been runnin' around like a madman lately. I'm a new dad, got a new job, plus I just had to replace my breaks, as well as my ignition switch! Boy that was fun...

What's the ets recall? I'm pretty much clueless unless somebody tells me. I'll check out the abs module next week when I get some time off of work. From the info you guys have given me it sounds like the problem. I definitely appreciate all your helps...thanks guys!!!

Mixing up 2 acronyms, TPS(throttle position sensor) and the ETM(Engine throttle module), first is located inside the second.
Here is a link that will explain it better than I could.

I am off the extended warranty that went 10yrs and or 200,000miles, so when mine goes I think I will go the Xemodex replacement unit. Unit costs 500 for your ETM to be rebuilt. Once you get it just replace on car and go, no need for programming from a dealership.

I spent Saturday morning with a mechanic in the driveway removing the abs module and will be packing it to ship to a guy in rogersville TN,who rebuilds for 40.00 on an Ebay special. I must admit it was not an easy task to remove it, and he had the proper hex wrenches. I didn't actually do it myself I watched. I will let you know how it works out.

It is Sunday and I have my newly rebuilt abs module on. No lights so far. Had the check engine light reset so the next few days will tell if all is well. The rebuild was an ebay special of 40.00 . Shipped overnight on Tuesday afternoon 17.00 they freeshipped back to me and had it in my hands by Thursday evening. The only wait was for my friend to come over this morning and put it back in. So far so good.
