Starting Issues '98 S70
Hello. I need help badly.
I have a 98 Volvo S70 - with 100k. Everything works good except for the following problem:
Every few months, when I try to start the car, nothing happens. When I turn the key, the dash lights come and, and nothing else happens. However, if i leave the car overnight, it will start right up in the morning. This has happened three times since I bought the car in Oct 2014.
2 mechanics have told me they could not fix it, because when they tried to start it, it worked perfectly. The only sound the car makes when this happens is a slight humming that comes from the area around the starter. Other than that, no attempted to crank or anything.
I had a mechanic check the large grounds, and he said they were fine.
Can anyone help!!! This really puts me in a bind, as I never know where I will be when my volvo decided not to start.
Please help!!!
Paul

Have you had your battery properly tested?
Sometimes a battery can begin to develop an intermittently occuring fault in one cell that drops the voltage output below 12V. Although lights and accessories may still operate there is insufficient voltage to operate the starter and turn the motor over.
My wifes car recently suffered from this very problem and it was only when it got tested whilst performing one of its outages that the battery cell fault became evident.
Previous tests passed as the defective cell was okay at the time of those tests.
New battery now and instant cure.
