Default Replace Timing Belt while Replacing Oil Trap?

I have a 2004 V70 with 90,000 miles which seemed to be using a lot of oil lately. The dealer said the Oil Trap was clogged. The replacement will cost $875. They also said while they were in there they should change the timing belt, water pump and thermostat to the tune of $1600 but that I would save about $1500 by doing all the work at once. Does that make sense.

On this car, the water pump is expensive and doesn't need replacing with the first timing belt. It's usually is replaced with the 2nd timing belt, as per most Volvo dealers recommendation because it's of very good quality.

Replacing the oil trap has no incidence on timing belt job. Replacing the timing belt is the same job with or without the oil trap in place.

If it's been long time since the oil trap was clogged, there could be more work to be done on the car. There is a passage inside the oil pan that also gets clogged - the oil pan needs to be removed to clean it. Ask Volvo is the price includes removing the oil pan. They can check this passage without removing the oil pan.

At 90000 miles and 10 years, if the timing belt is the original one, it has to be replaced. Depending of how worn it is, it could last another 20000 miles or it could snap tomorrow.

It's a good idea to replace the thermostat if it's the original one. They last less than 10 years. It's relatively expensive on this model, at least $150 in parts, better do it at once with the oil trap as it will save in labor time.
