Default Testing HT lead

Am I right in thinking that to test an HT lead using a multimeter, one simply puts a probe at each end and tests it in the same way as one would test a household plug fuse or similar?
Sorry to appear to ask such a damn silly question - I am no mechanic - I have bought a replacement HT lead today which, by the reading on my multimeter, appears to be faulty.

Can part-answer my own question now - one can't use the standard continuity test on a multimeter to check out an HT lead - have just bought a new Volvo replacement lead (which again showed an open circuit) but works on the car!
