I have read that Toyota WS is for vehicles 2004 or newer. (needs confirming)
Also for fully sealed transmission systems.

An AW55-50 transmission is supposed to have a JWS3309 rated fluid.

You can use Toyota T-IV, Mobil 3309 or synthetic Mobil 1-3309.
Several other fluids state they are equivalent to JWS 3309 also but check their spec's carefully if selecting one of these.
Toyota T-IV is cheaper than Mobil or Volvo ATF but is a very popular choice.
AW transmissions are a Toyota designed unit.

Correct. Anything meeting JWS3309 specifications works.

But it is not designed by Toyota. Aisin Warner makes them, hence the "AW"

This link basically outlines Toyota Motor corporations involvements with Aisin warner tranny's.
They strongly influence the manuf' / design of these transmissions.

Is it JWS3309 compatible?

Well, unless their (Toyota's) technical spec's specifically state WS meets JWS 3309 requirements I would not use it in a pre 2004 vehicle or a one without a fully sealed transmission.
I would stick with the T-IV or a known JWS 3309 compliant fluid.
The AW 55-50 is not a fully sealed transmission.

The viscosity of WS is much lighter than T-IV so I wouldn't do it. And the fact that WS is for JWS 3324 and not for 3309.

read post # 2 above.
Many forum members are using T-IV for their AW transmissions.
You should find it cheaper than Volvo ATF also.
Go for it.
