RE: V70 D5 2003 SE auto
To this day, I have not heard of a turbofan in a car butin aviation industry[8D].
Could you be a bit more specific as to the sound/noise? I can only assume that the whistling is from one of the pulleys for either the serpentine accessory drive belt or the timing belt. If latter, you have a serious condition that needs to be taken care of asap.
Do you hear the whistle at idle? If so, it probably has nothing to do with the turbocharger. If it's coming from the accessory belt, the tensioner pulley may be causing it. The pulley, according to the factory manual, is a routine service item that needs to be lubed at a specified interval (at least on 850).
Make sure to post this in the V70 forum, which you might already have done.

Thanks a lot for replying, but i feel i have quite a situation here.As the dealer i got the car from said its nothing to worry about,i find that hard to believe thats why i posted this question.
But basically the whistling sound is only audible from about 1500 to 2000 revs, and rises up and down in pitch with the engine revs.It can sound like a distant police car.
The Car has done about 108,000 miles and had a timing belt fitted before i collected it.
I think i will get it looked at by the main volvo dealer in my area to get a second opinion.
