Volvo is real Clever !!!
That is not at all what I was saying. I applaud at-home mechanics, good for you! The thing is though, there is always that chance that an airbag may not do its job in the event of a crash. In my opinion, that chance can be significantly reduced by employing the skill of the stealerships. That is MY prerogative, it doesn't have to be everyone's.
And, for the record, I do change my own oil. I have a friend (18 years old) who is one step away from being hired at Jiffy Lube. The same kid dropped a nut in his intake manifold and blew up TWO new engines in his Blazer. THAT is why I will never bring my car there.

We're beyond this
"he's the most interesting man in the world"
:P That's what I immediately thought of
There are some things that I do, some I don't. Usually has something to do with risk and tools. I will say this... there are not many times that I did not have to go behind a mechanic and adjust/fix/request a review of something that was not fixed properly. I just had something repaired on my Jeep and when I popped the hood I seen that a few hoses were not put back in their brackets.
Always check behind your mechanic period. You are the one that will be on the road in the car.
