This has been very helpful info, I am in a similar situation. My wife owns a 98 Volvo S70 T5 with roughly 247,000 miles. It has leaked a little bit of coolant from the turbo outlet hose (i think thats the one) slowly, so I haven't replaced it. But now the lower expansion hose starting to leak a lot, where coolant needs to be added at the end of the day.I have tighten up the clamp for now. It wasn't loose but I was able to tighten it a bit. But I want to go ahead and replace the tank and all the hoses attached to it. Should I go ahead and replace all 8 hoses??? Also anything else I should go ahead and replace, I read somewhere else its a good idea to go ahead and replace the thermostat too. I do all the basic maintenance on our cars oil changes/brakes/tune ups. But I am concerned about the hoses that go into the firewall, they seem like a pain to get to.

Replacing wear items before they fail is a good idea for just those reasons john mentioned.
Do you have any thoughts on Water Pump replacement? at what mileage should it be done. I have a S-40 2002. We just cracked a head on our 2000 S-10 Chevy Pick up. It was purchased new. Didn't even think about it until now. $3,000 later.

I always change the water pump at the same time with the timing belt

Default Heater hoses YUK!

I just replaced the heater hoses on my 1990 240 this weekend.
That was possibly the most painfull auto fix i have done to date.
At 58. Every bone in my body hurts!

Do it now if you have any doubt about their age and condition. You don't want to do this job on the side of the road!

Word to the wise, pick a nice day, DONT drink any coffee and think happy thoughts.

The connections are ALMOST impossible to reach without pulling the engine entirly.

It took me about 6 hours and i am a pretty good wrencher.
