Where do you find a new engine?
I am kind of buying a 2007 S40 T5 from my parents. They say that it needs a new engine. I have no idea why it needs a new engine, it runs, but it makes a banging sound. I don't know who they talked to that told them to get a new engine, but that's what they've told me to find and I can have it. It is a manual and it has awd. Do I have to find a 2.5L engine that came from a manual and had awd? Or will an engine from an automatic work? What is a reasonable price? Is there anything I need to do if this is what I'm doing?
Any help you can give me would be amazing.
Thanks,
Anna

Honestly, I don't much care why it is broken, I am much more concerned with making sure I get the right replacement. I'm concerned that I need an engine that came out of a manual S40 T5 AWD, when I've been looking for just about anything from a 2007 S40. I'm not sure if it is an easy convert from automatic to manual, or if the AWD makes a difference. I have figured out that the turbo matters, but that is a drop in the bucket of information that I need.

AFAIK, Volvo engines would be available from two major sources, with a third possiblity.
1. Factory rebuilt engines (even if brand new engines were available for an '07 model, you wouldn't want to pay for one). So, you or whoever's doing the work on your car would order it from Volvo.
2. A junkyard engine, i.e. an engine taken from a scrapped vehicle. This would obviously be a cheaper option, the problem is determining the condition of the engine.
3. If the car is still driveable, who determined that it needs a new engine? Take it to a reputable Volvo shop and have an estimate done on repairs needed.
