Will a light bar put too much strain on alternator or affect electrical system?
I have a 1990 740 GL with 330000 miles on it. The headlights are SOOOOOOOO oxidized. I have tried the usual fixes, products, and ridiculous hacks (bug spray toothpaste clear coat etc.). None of them work well or last more than a month because the sun just beats on my car and the plastic doesn't stand a chance. Every time I drive at night I get blinded by other people's headlights and its not safe. I was thinking about installing a lightbar so I can see at night, but I am not sure how the electrical system can compensate for an auxiliary cooling fan and light bar along with headlight etc. If I wire a 120 W lightbar to the battery with a switch will this be too much strain on the alternator? Will it mess with other electrical systems? I only ask because I can't imagine a 4 cylinder with only 114hp makes a lot of juice.
You being blinded by oncoming traffic has noting to do with how bright your headlights are, that would be a medical condition or plain ole getting old. None of the wipes/products work for any length of time. You need to try a sanding/refinishing kit. I swear by the Mothers NuLens kit, works absolutely awesome. 1st time using it is a bit scary because the lights look a whole lot worse at the 1st sanding.
Chopper thanks for the info I might give that a shot. What I meant by being blinded was that my headlights are so dim that my eyes dilate/dark adapt because they produce very little light, so when someone rives by it forces my pupils to constrict, and then I can barely see my headlights. Even if the headlight covers are perfectly clear the incandescent bulbs have very low output compared to the LED headlights that most cars have on them. If someone can educate me about the electrical system and if the alternator can produce enough juice for a light bar please LMK.,
You will blind or anger everyone you drive toward!! (maybe from behind also) You will also get the attention of every law enforcement officer that drives toward you.
The light bars are not designed to be used as headlamps - you need something that keeps the the beam pattern out of your friends eyes.
