Default 98 s70 needs an intake...tubes?

I have a 98 s70 GLT. I want to put a Short ram intake/cone filter and replace the stock airbox, but what is the small secondary tube coming off the top of the airbox? Does it just connect to a resonator or something?

Is this what your talking about? In the middle picture.

"Some 1998 models had a Secondary Air System (SAS) used to reduce emissions. The SAS system normally draws it's air supply from the factory air filter box. Since our Short Ram Intake replaces the factory air box, these models will need an additional filter for SAS.See the image on the rightto determine if your vehicle has SAS."

As you can see they sell the other filter needed as well.

I see. Do you think I could use one of those small filters off of ebay, or would you recommend that specific part number?

I recommend a filter just like EST provides.

i have a 99 s70, and i was wondering what you thought of the "build it yourself" intake kits that you can buy individual parts from from your local auto parts store?

A DIY kit is nice. Just follow some of the How Too's on the forum. Or come up with your own.

The R Kelly system is a joke though and I highly recommend that you don't make one similar to it.

One other thing to consider when fussing with the OEM air box, is that it's a red flag for the smog folks. If you live in California as I do, stick with the factory box and go with a K&N filter. I'm considering building some piping coming from the fog light slots in the front bumper up to the box. To me, this would be the best source of cooler air, maintaining somewhat stock appearances.
