1990 740 GL Wagon overheating
Hi, I am a new member , I should have read all the sticky’s and watched videos, your right, I was desperate and it was the fastest way to post and get a response, coz I can’t find my second post or don’t even know where I posted it unless I go into my page/ profile. Sorry about that! Hi, All you awesome Volvo owners! I love my Volvo and will die if it dies on me. I Do not have a running vehicle now, I’m so sad and don’t know what to do, But I’m happy and am proud to be a Volvo owner!
I own a 1990 740 GL wagon, it recently overheated caused by 2 hoses that came undone. The Heater hose was disconnected and it was biypassed so them hoses came undone. I replaced the gaskets coz It wouldn’t start, it was obvious I blew a gasket, and left me stranded. Anyway, it happened again, after connecting the hoses and letting car cool, it started again so I got to a safe place, I started the car again and added water, then turned car off to check water level, then the car didn’t start, so again, I waited a while but still didn’t start, I got towed again, as soon as car was dropped I was able to start it. I tried again then it would not start. There is lots of pressure build up in the car that is causing this problem! Can someone please help?
12:32pm- The water in reserve tank smells like gas, and the car started again. But there is still
pressure! I will be replacing the thermostat.

if you think you blew a head gasket, there's a few things to check 1) you can buy a test kit for HCs in the coolant (ie fuel/exhaust gas) 2) you can do a compression test 3) check for any coolant in the oil and oil in the coolant assuming the car is able to run. You may also need to test the coolant presssure with the engine running. Its quite possible the head gasket failed first allowing combustion chamber pressure to go into the coolant which could have blown off the weak hose connections
Thank You! I think I will get a pressure test! I will also send gaskets back and have them replaced just in case! I appreciate your response.
My neighbor did a test and said that number 2 spark plug has combustion pressure, there is some kind of leak! Combustion presssure gas is getting into the coolant system. Great! That’s the last thing I needed!
