Volvo tech says here is what you do

first start engine
if this is a manual transmission put it in neutral let the clutch pedal up.do you hear any noise now push the pedal down now is there a noise or does it go away with the pedal down.
If the noise goes away with the pedal down the problem is in the transmission,because with the pedal down the clutch stops all the parts in the trans to stop moving.
NOW if you have the noise when you push the pedal down its the clutch T/O bearing or release bearing(same thing).

Now if you have a Automatic Trans they sometimes make a whistle noise as the car ages.You can check the drive line by holding it at the joints and see if there is any play or movement,Volvo's do have lots of U-joint problems.

Also in the rear wheels that year had axle bearings problems.That's a job for a Volvo shop or someone who knows Volvo.You have to have a special tool to remove the bearings from the axles.I would lend you mine but,you maybe to far away.
