Question 2002 S60 AWD not engaging rear wheels

Hello friends! I have a 2002 S60 AWD that will not put power to the rear wheels... I have checked the fuses. I have had it up on a lift yesterday and noticed; when in drive, only the front wheels are turning and the front to back drive shaft is not moving. Once the main shaft is turned by hand, the rear wheels do move. My question is; does the main shaft always turn? If the rear wheels are turning when the shaft is moved by hand, that should mean that the bevel gear is ok, right? What am I missing?

the 2002 S60s use a Haldex system with an electronically controlled clutch to engage the rear wheels. The system senses a speed difference between the front and rear wheels. When all good, 100% of the power goes to the front wheels. When a front wheel slips, the clutch is electronically engaged and the power is split 50/50 front rear.

Thanks mt6127.

I am wondering if the shaft should be turning at all times? I was led to believe that it was the rear diff/haldex that would actuate the power to the rear... It seems that nothing is turning the shaft from the front as if it was disconnected up front..

The prop shaft should always spin. You most likely have a stripped coupler between the trans and the bevel gear.

That would make sense... I should look at the front coupler. Thank you!
