2005 XC90 5cyl 2.5T 5L Oil dry, smoke screen, no warning
Hey, guys (and gals, but I usually just use the generic "guys!)
here's the short version:
2005XC90 5cyl Turbo 2.5 liter engine, 5speed auto 140K miles
Somehow pretty much ALL of the oil magically disappeared, left me without leaving a note! No message on message screen, no check engine light, no problem with start-up icons, no leaks left on ground. It just walked out on me. Or however it disappeared in a couple months (I don't drive it much.)
Thursday, driving around town, started whining in 1st, only on acceleration, but okay after it upshifted. Started whining in every gear after couple shifts (still only accelerating). This all on surface streets. Assumed it was tranny, called mechanic and he thought okay to drive home and bring in Monday. On highway, in 5th, got STUCK on 2500-3000 RPM, 65-70 MPH. Mechanic agreed probably tranny. I needed to drive next day, he said bring it in Monday.
So yesterday I day drove it, same whining. Parked for couple hours, started it up and it started laying down a smokescreen. Checked fluids, OIL TOTALLY DRY! I mean, Dipstick showed NOTHING. Put about 4-3/4 qts (all I had) drove about 1/2 block, smoking like a chimney in a blizzard. Also, tapping. Pulled over. Called mechanic, "Don't drive it) so parked it and will tow on Monday.
¿Que es? Is the engine shot? Oh, yeah, heard tapping. Long time since I worked on a car but think lifters?Am I screwed? KBB not too high. Just put in complete brakes 7K ago, just had $5K+ body work. I LOVE this car. I mean, LOVE. Easy to
get in/out w/prosthetic (above knee amputee - AKA), it's LOADED! Some wear on driver seat from prosthetic socket. Needs new tires in a couple K. Otherwise MINT! Did I tell you I LOVE it?
Please tell me it's worth fixing? I thought I'd get more than 200K mi. On very low, fixed income (disability). Estimate on repair? Replace engine? If so, I'd guess replace timing chain and water pump, too? Gawd, I think I'm screwed.
Long version! LOL TMI but here goes:
I have a 2995 XC90 that is smokin' like a guy on death row on his last cigarette. Thursday it developed a high-pitched wine in first. Then it started happening in all gears. Because of that, I was afraid it was the tranny. When I got on the highway, trying to get home, when it hit fourth it revved up to about 4500 for a couple of seconds, then settled and sshifted to 5th. In fifth it stuck at about 2500-3000 and about 65-68 MPH. It would not go any faster. When I got off the highway I called my mechanic, he wasnt sure but said, yeah, could be tranny, to go ahead and go home, bring it in Monday.
On Friday I drove to an appointment. I was parked just a couple of feet from the fence.. When I started it I noticed smoke billowing out. A good amount. Got out to check the fluids. Oil was BONE DRY. added about 3/4 at I had in the car, then another 4 qts. Started it up, no smoke, but you could here tapping. No good, right?
Was going to limp home, headed down the street and realized I was creating a full-blown white-out behind me. Immediately pulled over, called mechanic, agreed to leave it and get it towed.
The 4 qts of oil was all they had at convenience store. Was going to stop and get more)
So, was scheduled for oil change in about 700 mi. Level was okay a couple of months ago (I don't drive it much. About 6-7K miles per year, so I do oil chg based on time, not miles)
Anyway, there was NO message in the message center, no check engine light, nothing wrong with the icons at start, and no signs of oil leak. 2005 XC 90 5C Turbo 2.5 5spd auto
What would make the oil vanish? Why was there no warning?
Just got $5K bodywork fixed, total brakes 7K ago, in love with this car.
Will it need a new engine? What should that cost? If new engine, should I do timing chain/water pump at same time? God, I love this car. Above knee amputee, this is easy to get in/out, comfortable. Bought from my brother (I had driven it from dealer to his house. Did I say I LOVE this car?
Is it worth repair? Blue book is pretty low. Except for where my prosthetic has worn the leather on driver's seat, it's in GREAT condition! Loaded, ceiling mount DVD, 3rd row, only thing it doesn't have is oil.
