2016 XC90 leak in cargo/area trunk-- what is cause and who can fix
Hi all,
I have a leak where water is coming in the rear cargo area. Left and right sides getting the most wet. Far back getting some drops as well. It's not precipitation, definitely a leak because it happens when it rains. It's causing the inside to smell and I'm constantly drying it out.
I have tried a few online suggestions to locate the leak but can't. Any ideas of common problems?
Second question-- who is best to fix? I took it to my local mechanic for a variety of minor repairs and he couldn't solve it-- suggested I take it to autobody shop. Does this sound right? I have a couple scratches I could fix, I guess, if this is the only way.

Thanks!
I just came back from a vacation and found the same thing on my 2016 xc90. My car had been parked slightly tilted on the driveway with the cargo being at the lowest point. Opened the car and noticed how everything inside was humid and water/moisture was dripping from the ceiling and windows, some water poured out when I opened the rear doors but the majority of the water was located in the trunk. The plastic compartment on the right side right above the fuse box was full of water, the compartment underneath the spare tire was full of water so I had to cut out the carpet/liner/foam in order to drain out the water and drain the liner. I do not know where the water got in so that I have to investigate but I’d appreciate if anyone had any tips! Also I found a rubber plug (drain?) underneath the spare tire after I cut out the lining, should this be remove so water can drain down that hole? See photo

Recently, I too have noticed the same problem, but thought it was a leak at the windshield. I looked behind and saw the puddle of water on the rear mat. I'm searching the forum for a DIY repair, but may have to take it to CarMax for warranty repair. The interior window is wet to the touch I noticed condensation on the driver side window.

UPDATE! The dealership located the source of the leak to be the rear sunroof seal shrunk, causing a gap. That allowed debris to enter the sunroof track and clog the rear drains. Also, the stock rear drains were also pinched. The technician removed and replaces the rear sunroof seals, cleaned and greased the sunroof track, clear drains, and replaced rear sound traps and drain hoses. Finally, a dehumidifier was used to dry the interior. Total cost for the repair: $1516.
