2016 XC90 T8 Sunroof leak into passenger footwell
I have a 2016 XC90 T8 (Plug-in hybrid). A week or so ago the back-up camera stopped working, came back on, stopped again and then other electrical things like child locks activating etc. started happening so I took the vehicle into Volvo. They called me back the next day and said there was a leak into the passenger footwell that had corroded "all the wiring" and that I should call my insurance as the car was "not repairable"!!! The bill to get this news was $ 700. I said that didn't make sense as I had never seen water (have weather tech mats and the leak is obviously under them). I told them to remove the carpets etc. see if we can dry it out and find the source of the leak (they hadn't located it as they said it didn't matter because they didn't see a reason to charge me more when the vehicle won't be repaired). Today (with the bill now over $ 1000) they told me that the leak is from the sunroof (cassette assembly). The leak supposedly ran behind the interior and settled in the passenger footwell. They also said all recalls have been done so there is "nothing they can do" as it is not related to a defect. They repeated the advice to call my insurance. When I suggested this was crazy as there is a known problem (as detailed in several threads here and elsewhere on the internet) they said they had already discussed with the service manager and they said again there is nothing they can do. They said I could call Volvo Canada if I wanted but that they think my best option is to call my insurance since the car is not repairable. This is still a very expensive vehicle and seems impossible but here I am. Any thoughts, ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Hi, i have similar problem, they said they need to change wires and connections which got damaged, roof hatch, sealers and 2 motors (sun roof i think), it will coat me around 5000 usd........plus he said they dont know if VCM module is going to work, if not its another 3000 usd ca. And door lock probably another 650 usd.
i dont know what to do lol this is like a cruel joke or somethink.
2016 volvo xc90 plug in hybrid, ofc warranty finished 1 year ago, never even seen wet floor or anything, had to go to check it out because gps started to bug and rear door was powerless.

It took a ton of fighting but I got my insurance company to write the car off and pay me market value. The fact that this was the second such problem at my small city Volvo dealer helped. I got a mechanic to admit that in trying to fix the first, where repairs went over $ 25K CAD, and it still wasn't right, they had reached out to numerous other dealers working on similar problems. Once it became obvious that 1) it was a known issue that I had nothing to do with and 2) trying to repair might be expensive and not work in the end they decided to just go with the safest option.
I will say that Volvo was entirely unhelpful throughout the ordeal and after having Volvo's in my life for 20+ years I will never buy another. Problems happen, but the lies, denials and excuses from both the dealership and Volvo Canada were such that I will not give them another chance.
Good luck with your repairs - mine was also out of warranty so keep fighting and talk to the mechanics who work on the cars more than the people behind the desks.

This is the email i got from them today, i asked why the roof was leaking."Hi.
Sorry about that, forgot to mention it in the previous e-mail. We won‘t know for sure untill we take it out, but most likely it‘s because of a clogged drainage in the roof hatch. When the drainage is clogged because of some dirt, basically the roof hatch mechanism is submerged, which causes it to get stuck and rust. And the side effect is that the water will find another way.
Just let us know when you have decided if you want us to continue with the repairs."
Is that just how it suppose to be? .............
The sunroof leaks are a known problem on the older models also. So much so that Volvo added "sunroof drain cleaning" to the every 7500 mile service, My weather tech mat caught my last leak on my 2006 XC90. On these older cars the leak doesn't affect as many things so a good dry out is possible and no damage occurs when caught soon enough. I don't know how the water got behind the floor mat. I feel for you guys with these new models. The quality is just not there and repairs are horrible. Volvo is ruining themselves.
im a lawyer but with same problem on a 2018 and considering filing suit, anyone still with the issue email me please at kdean@motleyrice.com.
thanks,
thanks,

Did you door locks stop working? I just saw water coming into my 2016 xc 90 today from the roof Funny thing was my door stoped auto locking by touch and my rear trunk stopped working a few months ago. I am now wondering if this is caused by the water coming in and im only seeing it now. Frustrated my as I’ve spent too much money in to this car already
