David from Michigan:two Volvos
Hello, I believe I've been a member before but don't recall. I have bought Volvos for two of my children, basing my decision on the reputation of the make and the experiences of owners I know. My older son, now 22, has a 1996 850 GLT, bought with his own money from my wife's great-aunt in February 2008, with 141,000 miles on the odometer. He just needed something to get around Fort Hood, Texas, and since he had just returned safely from his first deployment to Iraq, I wanted him in a vehicle as bulletproof as the armored vehicles he'd been riding around in Baghdad. It has 168,000 on it now. He's home safely after his second deployment, and attending college locally.
Two months ago, I bought a 2000 V70 with 108,000 miles on it for my now-18-year-old daughter for her to commute to the local university. She actually asked for a Volvo wagon, so we searched online until we found one -- and Volvo wagons at $4000 are hard to find around here without major issues or mileage approaching 200,000.
Middle son commutes to the same university in a 1994 Ford Probe, bought with 88,000 miles three years ago, now has 102,000.
I look forward to learning how to fix some of the Volvos' problems here.
