Default First Volvo

Greetings,

Thanks for maintaining such a nice helpful site. I just bought my first Volvo (99 V70), in part, as a reaction to paying for the gas on my old 91 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. So, when you hear Jeep, you know I have done some maintenance before. But this is my first Volvo so I will be leaning on this place for a while. I got a DVD service manual on Ebay too (haven't received it yet so I don't know how good it is). My first project will be struts.

That Jeep Grand Wagoneer will eat some gas that's for sure. I had one in 1978 that was a good off road vehicle and nice for long cruises, but always had something small going wrong. Mine had a 360 V8.

Welcome to the world of Volvos.

Welcome to the forum, and I hope you find it helpful.

Make sure to follow scheduled maintenance, and always try to go with OEM parts except certain components. NEVER neglect on the timing belt + pulleys + tensioner at every 70,000 miles or 5 years.

As to struts/shocks, you may want to avoid non-adjustable heavy duty sport units. Either the OEM (Sachs) or Bilstein Touring would make you happy (I went with the Bilstein and the only thing I did not like them was the lock nut design[8D]). If you can afford adjustable sport dampers, it may be a good alternative.
