first volvo .
howdy, i just got rid of my ford explorer and decided to buy my first volvo, a 1992 960 with 147k miles, the car is pretty clean for its age and it looks as if it has been maintained incredibly well. the sticker on the timing belt cover shows that the belt was changed last at 87 k miles, the ac was updated , theres what looks like an " srs inspection" sticker in the window, it passed smog like brand new and runs lke a dream , even the antenna goes up and down .
i'm sure i'll find myself here once in awhile as i plan to do most maintenance on it myself .. take care .

.. well. to be fair it was a 1994 explorer that i had for 10 years, and had 235 k on it ( 100 k that i put on it myself) and while it served me suprisingly well, i never really, you know, loved it. i fell in love with the volvo when i drove it home.if i can keep a peice of crap explorer on the road that long just imagine how long i'll have this car .....

the 960 was the wrong car for me.and i'm man enough to admit it , heh heh . i learned the hard way..it has been replaced by a beautiful '89 240 gl, the car i should have gotten in the first place. i went ahead and re-introduced myself in this forum . this time.. the car is my b---h, NOT the other way around.

yeah.. i realize that... "now" of course it was the VERY first thing out of just about anyone who knew anything about that car's mouth "you scored.. now go get the timing belt replaced" .. i got a sedan .. i posted pictures in my "re- introduction" the 960 is an embarrassing story .. i knew better, and even got a larger than usual tax refund that would have saved it, however, i will have to say that i'm WAY more into my 240 .. the gas milage is better and it suits me better, as i am a small engine mechanic by trade, very easy to work on so far , i can do the timing belt myself this time, and it is tons cleaner than the 960 was.. also seeing as how it stripped cogs rather than just wearing out and breaking, there is a possibility that something like the water pump might have seized. the the 960's parking brake didnt work.. that was a looming spectre, and the cruise control was basically gone and needed to be replaced.. i'd have to say the loss of the 960 was a very costly blessing in disguise.. 2 days after i got it i showed it to the local swedish mechanic and i was told it was clean enough and running well enough to be worth nearly twice what i paid .

incedently when i went to the wreckers to get a tail light (ended up with an "ok" taillight and an uncannily clean circuit board from another one), i saw a 960 .. just like mine, i opened the door and sat in it for a second.. then .. i saw the disneyland parking pass in the windshield..
i opened the hood and the guy i sold it to hadn't even tried to take the head off.. i guess the feeling i had was "closure" .. however i didnt get the cd i'd left in it out of the player..

I'm still a bit confused as to what happened to the 960 but that's water over the bridge now. Glad you got a 240 you like. I hope to get a '92 240 or 740 wagon soon. Not sure which it is yet but a guy told me about one that's about to come up for sale. I was told it has 88k on it and has been sitting in a garage for the past 3 years. Older lady passed and her son has been using it for a hauler every once in a while.

timing belt stripped about 6 inches worth of cogs, the engine turned over like it had no spark plugs in it. i sold it to someone for 400 bucks, even after i tried to convince them it was a bad idea.. that was almost 4 weeks ago, but i saw the car at the wreckers on saturday.. i'f you're lucky enough to get a 960 for cheap spend the extra couple hundred bucks and get the timing belt replaced.

I have had 3 960's as you can see from my signature. I did get one for $500 that had a busted water pump. I drove the car 30 miles with no water pump and it didn't even overheat. I dropped about $400 worth of parts in it and sold it to my cousin for what I had into it because he needed a car pretty bad and being a poor college student, I decided to give him a deal.
Did that water pump ever leak? Maybe the guy just needed a few parts off of it.
