Welcome to the club.
With proper care, you can minimise the problems on your S40.
I would first make sure that the following recalls have been taken care of:

European cars are notorious for poor electrical/electronic systems, but often CEL (Check Engine Light), ABS warning and such are triggered by negligible reasons.
I would follow scheduled maintenance stated in the owner's manual (I actually do them a bit sooner than what they recommend).
When you need technical guidance, hop over to the S40 forum. If nothing helps, call for Administrator Tech; the top Volvo tech in the U.S.
