First Volvo for me.
Hi, bought a 2004 S-40 last week. Have seen many negative remarks around the web, but I love the car! I'm a mechanic for a local utility company. Look forward to exchanging help and ideas!

With proper care, you can minimise the problems on your S40.
I would first make sure that the following recalls have been taken care of:
http://www.autobuyguide.com/2004/12-...lls/index.html
European cars are notorious for poor electrical/electronic systems, but often CEL (Check Engine Light), ABS warning and such are triggered by negligible reasons.
I would follow scheduled maintenance stated in the owner's manual (I actually do them a bit sooner than what they recommend).
When you need technical guidance, hop over to the S40 forum. If nothing helps, call for Administrator Tech; the top Volvo tech in the U.S.
